According to Nehal Shanghavi, founder and principal designer at Vedanth Design Studio, Bangalore, India, when it comes to bedroom design ideas, the adage “less is more” often holds true. A decor defined by clean lines, simplicity, and a monochromatic color palette can help create a calming space to inspire creativity, positivity, and sound sleep. This approach also allows the mind to wind down, especially after a bombardment of information and flashing screens all day.
This concept is best illustrated in a recent project of Shanghavi’s, a Bengaluru villa. “We manifested a design grammar with minimalist bedroom interiors accentuating just a few pieces of functional, form-focused furniture,” the designer says. Below, Shanghavi shares the practical tricks she implemented when curating the space to ensure a streamlined, yet warm room guaranteed to create the perfect cocoon for slumber.
1. Optimize windows
Small windows and a lack of natural light can make any space seem dull and gloomy, whereas expansive windows maximize views and illuminate the interiors. Further, natural light can help maintain your natural circadian rhythm, and reducing your dependency on artificial lighting also conserves electricity.
For this Bengaluru villa, Shanghavi took down the wall flanking the bedside and replaced it with a wide glass window. Since the bedroom is east-facing, the clients wake up to a beautiful morning every day and enjoy the breathtaking views layered with greenery. Adding in appropriate window treatments is also recommended, especially for sleepers who may need very dark rooms to drift off.
