Traditional Japanese Design Is the Highlight of This Waterfront Retreat in Chiba

This minimal, wood and concrete home sits right on the Tokyo Bay waterfront in the Japanese town of Tateyama, about 75 minutes from the Japanese capital. 

The three-bedroom house enjoys both direct beach access and unobstructed sea views. Maximizing the home’s beachfront aspect, almost every room opens through sliding doors onto either the garden or the upstairs balcony.

Built last year by SA Lab Architects, the design of the home was inspired by Amanemu, an Aman-branded hot spring resort in the hills of Ise-Shima that the owner is fond of, according to listing agent Yutaro Hirabara. “This property was designed with Amanemu as a motif, incorporating beautiful Japanese harmony and paying attention to every detail.” 

Amanemu was itself inspired by the ryokan style of traditional Japanese inn and features communal baths and tatami-matted rooms. This home features a version of both, with its sea-view bathroom boasting two tubs and two showers, and a guest bedroom with tatami mats, a form of Japanese flooring traditionally made of rice straw or rush grass.

The 1,862-square-foot home has three bedrooms, with one full bathroom, one shower room, and two half bathrooms. Spread over two floors, the home sits on a plot of 7,405 square feet.

Outside, the beachfront parcel features a manicured lawn separated from the driveway by native hedging, an attractive gravel path that leads to the entrance, and a covered parking spot for one car, with outdoor parking spaces for several more cars. 

Inside, the fully furnished home is equipped with an elevator. 

“This facility is very helpful for carrying heavy luggage and for people with weak legs and feet,” Hirabara said. There is a traditional Japanese tea room, and a second-floor balcony directly overlooking the beach.

Neighborhood Notes  

The home sits directly upon Nago Beach in Tateyama, a city in the prefecture of Chiba near the southernmost tip of the Bōsō Peninsula. Located on the eastern Pacific coast of Japan just east of Tokyo, Chiba is included in the Greater Tokyo Area, which has the distinction of being the most populous metropolitan area in the world. Chiba is known for being home to Tokyo’s Disneyland and the Keiyō Industrial Zone. 

The property lies about a 75-minute drive from Tokyo and all that the city has to offer, while enjoying the peace and privacy of a more rural setting.

“Due to the character of the area, it is rare to find a convenience store within walking distance, but you’ll find all your daily necessities in the AEON Tateyama shop a five-minute drive away,” Hirabara said. 

Nago Funagata Station is a 15 minute walk from the house, while Narita International Airport is a 90-minute drive away.
